A day in New Jersey

We had a great day today. My friend Matt and I went out on one of our photography excursions not knowing what we would find today. We started at Forsythe NWR in Absecon NJ at sunrise. We just about started on the first part and saw lots of fishing terns, and egrets. Carried on around to find herons and snowy egrets and bugs! we were getting eaten alive by sand flees and mosquitoes.. Mental note, next time bring bug repellent... We went around the drive a few times and took many shots as the sun was just right. Then we headed close to Cape May to here http://www.njwildlifetrails.org/DelawareBayshoreTrails/Sites/tabid/440/Scope/site/Guide/DELBAYSH/Site/3/Default.aspx and we saw a giant rockery full of cormorants, herons, egrets.. As well as eagles and a ton of ospreys. This spot is barren and way away from anything but very quiet.. no people. We got some of our best osprey shots here and from a natural nest as well as nesting boxes. Another 1000 clicks later we headed back to forsythe to find a very tolerant red tail hawk and 600 shots later we went on to get some of the golden hour light....
All in all a great day out....

Osprey Pair

Osprey Pair, originally uploaded by Thru Kurts Lens.

I spent the morning (4-3-2011) at Shady Hook in NJ. My first visit... In search of Osprey and I found them. What a great place and very well maintained and a lot to photograph. The Osprey were busy feeding and flying around. I try not to upset them by keeping my distance and standing in one spot until they get used to me. This pair gave me a great show for 4 hours. I could have stayed longer but I was frozen as it was cold and windy.. in April!

This is my second time photographing Osprey and I found it very hard to figure out my exposure while shooting as this bird is very white in areas and very dark. You cannot just under or over expose you have to be right on.. I guess another reason why I only shoot raw so I can adjust in PS or LR with ease.

Had a great time and I will be back.

Red Fox hunt

Red Foxes..
Had a great day looking for red foxes in NJ. We saw 5 foxes during the day and one was very friendly and gave us quite a show. i used a 300 2.8 and shot in manual. the snow gave some challenge with exposure but it was a great day out. End of January in the snow looks like a great time to spot them during the day.
